今日から数日間の日誌は7月から9月までに当センターで受け入れた患者さ
んの術前・術後の様子をまとめてお伝えしていきます。
この約3ヶ月という時間、私達センタースタッフは約5名の患者さんを受
け入れることになりました。その中で、術後に劇的な変化が起きた患者さんも
いれば、ご本人が思うような結果を得られなかった方もいらっしゃいました。
そして患者さんの変化に一喜一憂しながら励ますご家族の方の真剣な表情と
優しい眼差しこそが、難病と闘う患者さんにとって何よりの治療薬なのではな
いかと深く感じた数ヶ月でした。
2005年7月10日、当センターで初めてALS（筋萎縮性側索硬化症）の患者
さんを受け入れることになりました。以前から西山病院でALSの患者さんを見
かけたことはありましたが、実際に接するのは今回が初めて。西山病院の医師
からもお話を聞いたり、インターネットで調べてみたりで解っているような気
でいましたが、経験がないという一抹の不安は拭えません。未知との遭遇って
いうのはこのことです。
患者Eさん：
・病名：ALS（筋萎縮性側索硬化症）
・発病（診断）日：2004年5月
・入院（ご来中）日：2005年7月10日
・手術日：7月15日
・退院日：2005年7月31日
・入院時の状況：上肢は全く動かず。下肢には少し力があるが、車椅子から
ベッドまでの移動の際立ちあがれるのみ。首に力がないことや、胸部の筋力が
落ちている事から長時間座っているのが辛く、呼吸も困難な状態。誤嚥すること
が多く、咳き込む為食事に長時間を要する。口から涎が流れる。構音機能・発音
機能が低下し（言語ボードで会話）ほとんど無声で交流。足の浮腫みがひどい。
・術後すぐの状況：はっきりとした変化は見られず。
・退院直前の状況：首に力が入っている、術前のもやもやとはっきりしない発音
が少し改善された様子で、以前より聞き取りやすいものに。舌の動きが良くなった
（リハビリ中に気付く）。これら改善点をご家族が指摘するが、ご本人は改善した
と感じていない。
・ご帰国後の状況：足に力が入るようになったが、飲み込みは変化がなくやはり
よくむせる。
Eさんは上記でもありますように、病気がかなり進行した状態で西山病院へ
お越しになられました。しかし気管切開や胃ろうに頼らずに自分のもともと持つ
身体能力を使って生きたいという強い希望を持ち、今回の手術に臨まれました。
術後すぐに大きな変化はなく、退院直前もご本人が変化に気付くことなく帰国の
日を迎えられました。ご帰国の直前、Eさんはまた手術を受けに来たいと語って
おり、もしかしたら上記の変化以外にご本人は何かの変化を感じていたのかもし
れません。
